MANILA, Philippines — Twenty-four earthquakes, 257 rockfall events, and 16 pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) were recorded in Mayon Volcano over the last 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Sunday.

In its 5 a.m. bulletin, Phivolcs said that Mayon continued to display “intensified unrest or magmatic unrest,” adding that it remains under Alert Level 3 due to “potential explosive activity within days or weeks.”

Earlier, Phivolcs monitored two volcanic quakes, higher rockfall events at 308, and one PDC.

Mayon’s “very slow effusion” of the lava flow, Phivolcs added, has reached 1.3 kilometers (km) and 1.2 km along Mi-isi and Bonga gullies, respectively, while the collapsed debris extended to 3.3 km from the crater.

As of June 25, Mayon released 663 metric tons of sulfur dioxide daily, with plumes reaching 600 meters tall while drifting west-southwest.

Phivolcs warned residents within the area of rockfalls, landslides, avalanches, ballistic fragments, lava flows, and moderate-sized explosions, among others, amid Mayon’s unrest.

As of June 22, NDRRMC reported that Mayon’s continuous volcanic activity had displaced 38,989 individuals or 10,112 families residing in 26 barangays.
