Retired Air Force member dies in ‘accidental’ gun discharge in Batangas

LUCENA CITY – A retired Philippine Air Force (PAF) personnel died after his firearm allegedly went off by accident while he was cleaning it on Wednesday, June 14, in San Jose town in Batangas province.

Batangas police said in a report Thursday that 2nd Lieutenant Florencio Nitro, 67, was in the kitchen of his house in Barangay Natunuan around 2:30 p.m. cleaning his .45 pistol when it accidentally fired, hitting him on his chest.

The victim died on the spot from a fatal gunshot wound. Found beside him were the firearm, an empty magazine, one empty bullet shell, and gun cleaning materials.

The police described the incident as an “accidental discharge of a firearm.”

An investigation is still ongoing and the victim’s body will be subjected to an autopsy, police said.
