Phivolcs: No tsunami warning after 6.3 earthquake in Batangas

MANILA, Philippines — The 6.3 earthquake in Calatagan, Batangas early Thursday is not likely to generate a tsunami, state seismologists said.
“We don’t expect a tsunami warning because of the depth of the focus,” the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said in a statement.

The tectonic tremor occurred at 10:19 am, 15 kilometers southwest of the said area, and had a depth of 119 kilometers.

Shallow earthquakes on the ocean floor cause most tsunamis, says the International Tsunami Information Center.
The United States Geological Survey also said earthquakes below magnitude 6.5 are unlikely to trigger tsunamis.
