MANILA, Philippines — A motorcycle rider was decapitated in a freak accident involving a sports utility vehicle and a fuel tanker in Edsa-Shaw underpass on Wednesday morning, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said.
The unidentified motorcycle rider was hit by a white sports utility vehicle before he fell and was run over by a tanker while traversing along the bus lane of Edsa Shaw Boulevard tunnel past 5 a.m.
The rider and the SUV driver were both traversing the Edsa Bus Carousel lane while the tanker was driving beside the bus lane.
“The motorcycle rider was hit by a white SUV, so the victim fell and was run over by a fuel tanker,” MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said in Filipino.
“The rider was decapitated, and his internal organs were scattered along the highway,” Artes added.
Despite being illegal, motorcycle riders and other motorists regularly traverse the exclusive bus lane of Edsa.
Artes hopes motorists do not disregard the law regarding the bus lane.
“We keep on reminding motorists not to use the innermost lane of Edsa as it may result in an accident, but despite our repeated calls and pleas, many drivers of privately owned vehicles and motorcycle riders disregard the policy,” Artes stressed.
Meanwhile, the SUV driver remains at large and authorities are checking the closed circuit television cameras to acquire the license plate of the SUV.
Artes also urged the suspect and other motorists who witnessed the incident to cooperate with the police.
