MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) commenced the second phase of its P10.56-billion Mindanao Substation Upgrading Program to ensure continuous operations in the island amid sudden power outages.
The company said it energized on Tuesday a 100-megavolt ampere (MVA) power transformer in its Toril substation.
Under the second phase, NGCP will be upgrading 10 substations across seven provinces in Mindanao.
The first phase of the project involved the energization of 100-MVA, 75-MVA, and 50-MVA transformers for the Agus 6, Pitogo, Placer, NagaMin, General Santos, Polanco, Opol, Maramag, San Francisco, Bislig, and Kidapawan substations.
The company earlier boasted of improved overall system reliability since taking over the country’s power grid in 2009 amid tensions in Congress over its legislative franchise.
“The energization of the transformer in Toril, as well as the energization of high-voltage equipment and facilities all over Mindanao, will boost the grid’s overall reliability,” NGCP said in a statement.
“These upgrading efforts are ultimately geared toward readying the grid for the influx of businesses, industries, and investments in the region.”
