MANILA, Philippines — The gunman in the deadly shooting of local radio broadcaster Cresenciano Aldovino Bunduquin has been identified and authorities are preparing charges, according to Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr., chief of the Philippine National Police.

“It’s ready for filing; the second suspect has been identified. We will provide the specifics once the case is filed,” Acorda said.

Bunduquin, 50-year-old commentator for dwXR 101.7 Kalahi FM, was shot and killed in front of his sari-sari store by one of two motorcycle-riding assailants in Barangay Sta. Isabel in Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro, on May 31. He was brought to the hospital, but was later declared dead on arrival.

The driver of the motorcycle, Narciso Ignacio Guntan, died after the victim’s son gave chase and hit the motorcycle on the rear, killing Guntan who fell off the motorcycle.

Solid, strong case

The second suspect, who was the gunman, was able to flee, but Acorda said they have already received information regarding his whereabouts.

“I was assured by the regional director that it is a solid and strong case, and this is a fruitful investigation,” he said.

Acorda did not provide the possible motives behind the killing to avoid preempting the results of the investigation, but he said it was an “isolated” case.

Bunduquin is the third journalist to be killed since President Marcos took office in June 2022.
