Pig deaths due to various illnesses in Negros Occidental breached the 10,000 mark on Sunday, June 4. Data from the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) showed that 10,004 hogs in the province had died since April 1, mostly due to hog cholera.

Data from the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) showed that 10,004 hogs in the province had died since April 1, mostly due to hog cholera.

The number represents 8.84 percent of the hog population in the province.

Damage due to swine deaths in the province has reached P114,280,250 and affected 1,889 hog raisers.

The areas with the highest number of pig deaths were San Enrique with 2,596, Valladolid – 1,947, Bago City – 1,582, and Pontevedra – 1,023, the PVO said.

So far, the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) confirmed only one hog death due to the highly contagious African swine fever (ASF) in the province.

The Negros Occidental government has isolated an area in Pulupandan town where its first ASF case was detected on May 30.
