PNP mourns death of Bataan cop slain in buy-bust sting

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Wednesday expressed its sadness over the death of a police officer who was shot multiple times in a gun buy-bust operation in Bataan on May 23.

Reports said Col. Darnel Alfonso, a member of the Intelligence Unit of Bataan Police Provincial Office, and two unidentified suspects were killed, while two members of the arresting team, Major Dennis Duran and Msg. Glenn Salac were injured in Barangay Gen. Lim, Orion.

Alfonso was killed after suffering from multiple gunshot wounds when the police and suspects engaged in a shootout.

This was during a buy-bust operation against illegal firearms early Tuesday morning.

To honor his heroism, the police force said it would provide financial assistance and all benefits due to Alfonso’s bereaved family.

Meanwhile, Duran and Salac, now in stable condition at the Bataan General Hospital and Medical Center, will be given medical assistance until their health recovers.
