Cloudy skies, some rain showers to prevail in western parts of PH

MANILA, Philippines — The western part of the country may experience cloudy skies and isolated rain showers on Tuesday and in the next few days due to the southwesterly wind flow, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

“Ngayong araw ay meron pa rin tayong mararanasan na pagulan sa bahagi ng Palawan and as early as this morning ay posible na tayo ay makaranas ng isolated na pag ulan ang kanlurang bahagi ng Visayas at Mindanao, maging ang ilang bahagi din ng Davao region,” weather specialist Grace Castañeda said in a morning weather forecast.

(Today, we may still experience rain in Palawan. As early as this morning, we may experience isolated rain showers in the western part of the Visayas, Mindanao, and some parts of the Davao region.)

Meanwhile, Castañeda noted Tropical Storm “Mawar” remains outside the Philippine area of Responsibility (PAR). It was last spotted 2,300 kilometers east of Visayas and generally moves northwestward.

“Nakikita natin generally pwede itong kumilos northwestward at maaaring lumapit dito sa area ng extreme northern Luzon,” she said.

(We can see that it can generally move northwestward and may approach here in the area of extreme northern Luzon.)

Although the typhoon outside PAR may not directly affect parts of the country, Castañeda said it might enhance or intensify the southwesterly wind flow, which may cause rain showers and thunderstorms in the western part of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao starting this Friday (May 26).

She added Mawar will likely enter PAR by Friday morning or Saturday morning. It has maximum sustained winds of 155 kilometers per hour (kph) with gustiness of up to 190 kph.

The state weather bureau earlier said once Mawar entered the PAR, it would be named Betty.

Currently, no gale warning was hoisted over any of the country’s coastal waters.
