MANILA, Philippines — The heat index in Metro Manila reached the “danger” category for the fifth consecutive day, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Monday.
Pagasa’s station in Pasay City recorded a heat index of 43 degrees Celsius at around 2:00 p.m. on Monday, May 15.
Metro Manila’s heat index from May 11 to 13 was 42 degrees Celsius and rose to 43 degrees Celsius on Sunday, May 14.
Based on Pagasa’s metrics, a heat index under the “danger” category ranges from 42 to 51 degrees Celsius.
The state weather bureau said a heat index under the “danger” category could likely cause heat cramps and heat exhaustion, while heat stroke is probable with continued sunexposure
Heat index measures the level of discomfort an average person experiences due to combined effects of the temperature and air humidity.
