4,600 new teachers needed

At least 4,600 more teachers are needed in public elementary and high schools in Eastern Visayas, according to officials of the Department of Education (DepEd).

Rebecca Ragrag, officer in charge for policy, planning and research of the regional DepEd office, said for school year 2012-2013, the region needs 1,077 new teachers for elementary and 3,589 new teachers for high school.

The region currently has 21,855 teachers in elementary and 7,466 in high school. Eastern Visayas, however, has a student population in elementary and high school of at least 1 million. Joey Gabieta, Inquirer Visayas
