MANILA, Philippines — At least 7,500 inmates or about a quarter of the total population of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) are expected to be transferred to other penal farms this year as part of the plan of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) to shut down the national penitentiary in Muntinlupa City in 2028.
The inmates from the NBP’s minimum and medium security compounds will be moved to Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm in Puerto Princesa, Palawan; Leyte Regional Prison in Abuyog, Leyte; and Davao Prison and Penal Farm in Panabo, Davao del Norte. Each of the three facilities will receive 2,500 inmates from the NBP, BuCor Director General Gregorio Catapang Jr. said on Monday.
Other persons deprived of liberty in NBP will be transferred in batches from 2024 to 2027 to other regional prisons to be constructed in preparation for the closure of the NBP in 2028.
