MANILA, Philippines — The local government of Quezon City has reminded restaurant owners to implement an ordinance that provides a 20-percent discount to registered solo parents every first and last Sunday of each month.

According to Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, implementing the discount aligns with the country’s commemoration of National Solo Parents Week and the city’s 10th QC Solo Parents Week observance.

“Ordinance SP No. 2766, S-2018, introduced by Councilor Racquel Malangen, is already being fully implemented, and solo parents can avail of it,” Belmonte said in a statement issued Sunday.

“Itong batas na 20-percent discount every first and last Sunday. Ginawa na namin ang IRR (Implementing Rules and Regulations), ibinigay na namin sa Business Permits and Licensing Department (BPLD). Ibinaba na po iyan sa lahat ng business establishments,” she added.

(This law of 20-percent discount applies every first and last Sunday. We have done the IRR and given it to the BPLD, which has been given in all business establishments.)

Solo parents must present a valid Solo Parent ID issued by the Quezon City Social Services Development Department (SSDD) to avail of the discount.

Meanwhile, the mayor urged locals to report establishments that will not comply with the ordinance, as she ordered BPLD to monitor and remind restaurants of their compliance.

Violators will receive a written warning from the SSDD or BPLD on the first offense, while a fine of P2,000 will be imposed for the second and a P5,000 fine or revocation of business permit for the third offense.

Belmonte said that the city government will support solo parents, adding that her “administration has lined up several programs and projects for their welfare while waiting for the full implementation of the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act.”

Among other initiatives for solo parents are P20,000 cash aid to start a business and the Small Income Generating Assistance (SIGA) program for small business owners.

Qualified locals may also provide educational and medical assistance and tablets for public grade school students.
