A somewhat surprising start has catapulted the Meralco Bolts to the top of the standings of the 36th PBA Governors’ Cup.

Their stay at the top will be heavily challenged as the Bolts face the Barangay Ginebra Kings in the main game of today’s double-header at the Araneta Coliseum.

Despite missing several key players due to injuries, the Bolts have managed to take off to a flying start, earning two straight wins against quality opponents to join the grand slam-seeking Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters at the top with similar 2-0 (win-loss) cards.

The Bolts opened their campaign with a 105-100 win over the Petron Blaze Boosters and followed it up with an 81-78 conquering of the Alaska Aces.

Import Champ Oguchi has been delivering the goods and with the support of locals Mark Isip, Solomon Mercado, Gabby Espinas and Asi Taulava, the Bolts have been winning games despite the continued absence of Mark Cardona, Marlou Aquino and Chris Ross.

The Kings are looking to get back on track as they stumbled against the Boosters, 89-100, after starting the tournament with a 92-80 victory over the Powerade Tigers.

In the first game, the Boosters gun for their third straight win against the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. The Boosters have won their last two games since acquiring the services of import Jeremy Wise, who replaced Ricky Harris.

Petron and Rain or Shine are tied at second place with identical 2-1 slates.
