MANILA, Philippines — All 478 jail facilities across the country had no major incident from April 1-10, including during the Holy Week, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) said Tuesday.

The bureau observed lenten activities amid heightened measures to ensure the safety of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs), including regular and surprise cell inspections to confiscate illegal items.

“The BJMP is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for PDL and personnel in all its facilities, and it will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that this goal is achieved,” BJMP Jail Chief Supt. Ruel Rivera said in a statement.

Meanwhile, amid the dry season, the BJMP said it had prepared ways to address anticipated health concerns, including infectious diseases accompanying the hot weather and overcrowding issues. Among the preventive actions were deploying health personnel to regional offices and jail units and stationing additional personnel in congested prisons.

It also reported that it is doing regular maintenance and repairs of jail facilities and equipment. — MJ Soriano, trainee
