President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has appointed a former Court of Appeals (CA) justice who acquitted a US soldier for the 2005 rape of a Filipino woman as commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR).
Former CA Associate Justice Monina Arevalo Zenarosa took her oath before Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin in Malacañang on Thursday.
“With her extensive experience in the field of law and human rights protection, CHR Commissioner Zenarosa will be responsible for the implementation of the rights of all Filipinos, particularly the marginalized,” the Presidential Communications Office said in a statement.
Zenarosa, 83, acquitted US Marine Lance Cpl. Daniel Smith for the 2005 rape in Subic. Zenarosa obtained his law degree from the University of Santo Tomas and passed the bar exams in 1959. Zenarosa joins CHR Chair Richard Palpal-latoc and Commissioners Beda Epres and Faydah Dumarpa. —Nestor Corrales
