MANILA, Philippines — The suspect in the 2018 killing of Trece Martires City vice mayor Alexander Lubigan in Cavite province has been arrested, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said Wednesday.
Police said Ariel Fletchetro Paiton, also known as “Dagul and Labuyo,” was finally cornered on March 10 in Barangay Sta. Ana, Antipolo in Rizal province after five years of hiding. His arrest was the result of months-long surveillance.

Paiton tried to evade arrest by shooting at police officers but the ensuing brief exchange of fire resulted in his injury, allowing authorities to collar him, according to the PNP eventually.
Police also said that they seized from Paiton one Norinco pistol loaded with 16 rounds, which were later turned over to the Provincial Forensic Unit for ballistic examination.
Paiton, whose arrest was authorized by standing warrants for murder and frustrated murder, will face additional charges for illegal possession of firearms, the PNP noted.
Gunmen ambushed Lubigan on July 7, 2018, in front of the Korea-Philippines Friendship Hospital along Trece Martires-Indang Road in Barangay Luciano. His aide was also killed.
