MANILA, Philippines — The Marinduque Water District has awarded a contract for the supply of 29.2 million liters of potable water to the whole province to Pasig City-based Peak Off-Grid Innovations and Solutions Inc.

Under the contract, the company will supply 240,000 inhabitants of Marinduque with an uninterruptible supply of potable water using solar-powered Finnish desalination technology, which will convert seawater into fresh water for drinking and irrigation.

The Boac River was the primary source of water in the province until the Marcopper mining disaster struck.

The construction of the project is expected to start by the third quarter.

“I am pleased that this unique Finnish technology is offering solutions to the challenges of the people of Marinduque. Finland’s water expertise is world-class,” said Pyykkö.

Velasco said the project would ultimately bring an end to the Marinduqueños decades-old problem of inadequate potable water supply. “Soon enough, our water woes will be over,” he said.
