LUCENA CITY – Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla has ordered the resumption of face-to-face classes in both public and private schools at all levels in the province on Wednesday, March 8, due to the sudden end of the jeepney strike.

“There is no longer any need to suspend face-to-face classes in view of the resumption of operations of public utility jeepneys,” Remulla said in his Executive Order No. 10, a copy of which was posted on social media.

On March 5, Remulla issued Memorandum No. 8 that ordered the suspension of face-to-face classes and the implementation of alternative learning modalities in all schools in the province from March 6 to 12 due to the declaration of jeepney groups to stage a week-long strike to protest the impending phaseout of traditional jeepneys.

The strike was held to protest the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) memorandum setting a June 30 deadline for traditional jeepney operators and drivers to join cooperatives or risk losing their franchises.

The LTFRB has extended the validity of traditional jeepneys’ provisional authorities (PAs), or franchises, from June 30 to Dec. 31.

But the protesting jeepney drivers suddenly lifted their strike Wednesday following a meeting in Malacañang on Tuesday night, March 7.

Mar Valbuena, chair of Manibela, a coalition of public utility vehicle (PIV) drivers and operators’ groups, said the decision to end the transport protest aims to start the discourse and help both sides develop an effective solution and a public transportation modernization program.
