Mata tops Bantayan chess tilt

GEROLD MATA dominated the open category of the Bantayan District Jail Island Summer Chess Tournament held April 1 and 2 at the Madridejos municipal grounds in Madredijos town in Bantayan Island, Northern Cebu.

Mata, a former college chess varsity, tallied 6.5 points to win the seven-round Swiss System format tournament and the cash prize worth P3,500.

In the high school category, Elaila Mae Monsalud emerged victorious while Juvy Caratao and Jason Rey Sarabia finished second and third, respectively.

Jethro Benedict Pacifico ruled the elementary division. Joshua Bacolod claimed second place while Ellah Mae Gervacio placed third and also bagged the youngest competitor award.
