Cargo vessel runs aground near Lubang Island; 14 crew members rescued

CITY OF CALAPAN – Fourteen crew members of a cargo vessel were rescued early Monday (Feb. 27) by the Philippine Coast Guard Station in the province of Occidental Mindoro after their vessel ran aground near Lubang town.

In an incident report, the PCG said the cargo vessel MV Manfel V ran aground around 7 p.m. Sunday in the vicinity waters off Lubang, or at approximately 110 meters from the shorelines of Lubang’s Barangay (village) Maligaya.

Based on the initial investigation, MV Manfel V suffered engine trouble at 9 a.m. on Saturday near Fortune Island after leaving Subic town in Zambales province en route to Bauan town, Batangas province.

The ship drifted while heading toward Lubang Island and subsequently ran aground.

MV Manfel V is a general cargo vessel with 498.72 gross tonnage and was skippered by Captain Radie Brillante and operated by Manfel Cargo Shipping, which is based in Taguig City, according to the PCG.

All 14 crew members on board were brought to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office for a medical examination.

“Fortunately, they were all in good physical and health conditions. As of now, all 14 crew members on board are in the custody of Coast Guard substation – Lubang for further inquiry,” said the PCG report.

It added: “Coast Guard Station Occidental Mindoro is continuously monitoring the vessel to check for any signs of oil spillage and further advised the master of the vessel to file a marine protest within 24 hours.” INQ
