MANILA, Philippines — EcoWaste Coalition warned Valentine’s Day customers to avoid “reprotoxic” perfumes after finding butylphenyl methylpropional in many local fragrances.
“Some perfumes, which are among the most popular gifts for Valentine’s Day, may contain chemical ingredients that are classified as ‘reprotoxic’ and should not be purchased and used,” explained EcoWaste Coalition National Coordinator Aileen Lucero.
“Consumers should read product labels carefully and steer clear of fragrances with ingredients that can affect fertility and the fetus during pregnancy,” Lucero said in a statement Tuesday.
EcoWaste discovered reprotoxic substances damage reproduction and fetal development. Divisoria Shopping Malls in Binondo, Manila, sell 32 butylphenyl methylpropional perfumes for P50–P3,000. EcoWaste said the EU banned this harmful chemical from perfumes last March.
“Other consumer products that may contain butylphenyl methylpropional include deodorants, shaving creams, shampoos, conditioners, household cleaners, and laundry products such as detergents and fabric softeners,” the group said.
