Mastermind, gunman in Ombudsman employee slay nabbed

MANILA, Philippines — The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said on Tuesday that the mastermind and the gunman in the fatal shooting of an employee of the Office of the Ombudsman have been arrested.

The employee, Dianne Jane Paguirigan, 37, was shot dead by an assailant in Barangay Doña Josefa, Quezon City, last Feb. 1.

Gen. Nicolas Torre, QCPD chief, identified the gunman as Marlon Ayup Nery, 47, a resident of Barangay Bungad, Quezon City.

Upon questioning, Nery confessed that a certain Dexter Cruz, also an employee of the Ombudsman, paid him to kill the victim.

With the aid of street CCTV footage, police were able to track down the gunman and conduct a manhunt operation which led to his arrest. Seized from the gunman were several guns, live ammunition, phones, ID and a motorcycle. Cruz was later arrested.
