Senate panel OKs bill seeking to split biggest barangay in PH into six villages

A Senate committee approves the bill seeking to split Caloocan City's Barangay Bagong Silang – the biggest in the Philippines.

MANILA, Philippines — A Senate committee approved Tuesday the bill seeking to divide Caloocan City’s Barangay Bagong Silang – the biggest in the Philippines both in size and population — into six independent villages.

The Senate committee on local government approved House Bill No. 5819 filed by Caloocan 1st District Rep. Oscar “Oca” Malapitan.

“There being no more matters to take up, House Bill No. 5819 is hereby approved at the committee level and will be submitted to the plenary already for deliberation,” declared panel chair Senator JV Ejercito during the hearing.

There was an attempt to subdivide Barangay Bagong Silang before – through a bill filed in the 15th Congress. But the proposed measure was archived after it failed to reach the Senate before the congressional term ended.

Citing the Philippine Statistics Authority, Malapitan said Barangay Bagong Silang has a population of  261,729 individuals or 55,087 households.

In terms of area, the village covers 524.68 hectares of land in Caloocan City.
