PUERTO PRINCESA CITY — A fire that broke out Tuesday night in this city razed 58 houses leaving at least 83 families homeless.

The blaze at 10:40 p.m. that hit New Buncag in Barangay Mandaragat left around P700,000 damage to properties.

Firefighters had a hard time containing the fire, City Fire Marshal Fire Superintendent Nilo Caabay said in an interview Wednesday, Feb. 1.

“Accessibility to the fire scene was difficult. Ten fire hoses [had to be] connected to get to that area,” Caabay said. Parked cars were among the obstructions to the affected homes.

The fire spread rapidly as most of the houses were made of light materials, he added.

The number of gutted houses and families affected may increase as barangay officials were still consolidating their data, Caabay said.

Most of the victims were staying at the barangay evacuation center, while others moved to their relatives’ houses.

The firefighters were still determining the cause of the fire.

The fire was declared under control at 11:58 p.m. and fire out at 2:53 a.m. on Wednesday.
