MANILA, Philippines — Up to one tropical cyclone may be experienced for the month of February, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) on Wednesday.
Pagasa weather forecaster Patrick Del Mundo said that this was due to the prevailing northeast monsoon or “amihan” that makes the temperature unconducive for low-pressure areas to develop into a tropical cyclone.
“Para sa buwan ng Pebrero, possible po na magkaroon tayo ng hanggang isang bagyo, at based na rin sa climatological track, halos walang tumatama o walang nagla-landfall sa ating kalupaan tuwing buwan ng Pebrero. Although mayroon pa rin nagbubuo ng bagyo, nasa loob lamang ito ng Philippine area of responsibility at usually nag rerecurve palabas,” said Del Mundo.
(For the month of February, it is possible to have one tropical cyclone, and based on our climatological track, almost none hit or make landfall during February. Although there can still be cyclones that form inside the Philippine area of responsibility, they usually curve back outwards).
Del Mundo said, however, that the shear line (the area where cold and warm winds meet) could still cause rain because of the northeast monsoon.
Meanwhile, overcast skies with rain are expected over the country on Wednesday, Pagasa said.
According to the state weather bureau, the northeast monsoon will trigger cloudy skies with rain in Cagayan Valley, Aurora, Quezon, and Bicol, while Eastern Visayas and Caraga will experience similar weather due to the shear line.
Pagasa raised a gale warning over in several areas due to the strong northeast monsoon winds, including the eastern coasts of Albay, Sorsogon, Northern Samar (as well as its northern coast), Eastern Samar, Dinagat Islands, Siargao Islands and Bucas Grande Islands.
Fisher folks and those with small seacrafts are warned not to go out to sea.
