MANILA, Philippines — The Philippines is not expecting any tropical cyclones until the end of January, the state weather bureau said on Friday.
However, there is still a possibility that a low pressure area forms off Mindanao, according to Benison Estareja, weather specialist of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
“Wala tayong inaasahang bagyo hanggang weekend and even until the end of January,” Estareja said in a public weather forecast.
(We don’t expect any tropical cyclones until the weekend even until the end of January.)
“Aasahan pa din natin ang mga cloud clusters dito po sa silangan ng Mindanao na posible naman maging low pressure area in the coming days,” he added.
(We still expect that the cloud clusters here in the eastern section of Mindanao could possibly become a low pressure area in the coming days.)
Despite the absence of a tropical cyclone this month, several areas in the country saw incessant rains which resulted in floods and landslides.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said 39 people have died due to persistent and widespread rain and floods triggered by LPAs and other weather systems like northeast monsoon and shear line.
