COVID-19 hits 1,891 more in PH from January 16-22, says DOH

MANILA, Philippines — From January 16-22, COVID-19 infected 1,891 more people in the country, according to the Department of Health (DOH).
This number was lower than the 2,934 new coronavirus cases recorded the week before.
In its latest report, the DOH said the infection of 1,891 people last week means a daily average of 270, which is 35 percent lower than the 419 daily average of new cases from January 9-15.
Of the new cases last week, four were considered severe or critical, which brought the sum of active severe or critical cases to 432 as of January 22.
The COVID-19 death toll, on the other hand, increased to 65,694 with the addition of 104 patients who died due to the disease.
The DOH said seven of the 104 coronavirus patients died in the past two weeks, while the rest died since May 2020, but their passing was only finally validated recently.
As for the utilization of hospital beds by COVID-19 patients, the agency reported Monday that it decreased from 21.6 to 19.1 percent for non-ICU and 17.2 percent to 16.1 percent for ICU beds.
On progress in vaccination against COVID-19, the DOH said the country now has a fully-vaccinated population of 73,820,001 (94.52 percent of target people), as 16,710 more received the shots last week.
Boosted individuals, meanwhile, stood at 21,293,632 as of January 22, with the addition of 51,925 who recently got booster doses.
178 fresh infections recorded Monday
Meanwhile, the DOH then registered 178 additional infections on Jan. 23, the day after the period the department’s latest weekly report was based on.
The new infections brought active infections to 10,419, while the total COVID-19 caseload now sits at 4,072,035, with 3,995,900 recoveries and 65,716 deaths.
Metro Manila continued to lead the list of regions with the highest number of infections in the past two weeks at 1,177, followed by Calabarzon with 591, and Central Luzon with 286.
Meanwhile, per area, Quezon City leads with 231 infections, followed by Cavite with 184, and Manila by 171.
