LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte—The Philippine Marine Corps (PMC) is scouting for an area in Ilocos Norte’s capital city of Laoag where its detachment unit could be established.

According to the government of Laoag, the possibility of building a detachment unit in a coastal area of the city was discussed during a recent courtesy call between personnel of the 4th Marine Brigade and Laoag Mayor Michael Marcos Keon.

The city government said that Laoag city is considered an “area of interest” for being a center of commerce in Ilocos Norte, and a site of “vital installations.”

After spending at least six years in Sulu, the 4th Marine Brigade was deployed to the province in September last year.

The troop, which was last deployed to the province in 1983, is now headquartered at Camp Cape Bojeador in Burgos town, where they help “ensure the safety and development of communities in the area” and provide “humanitarian assistance, disaster response and joint law enforcement operations.”

Brig. Gen. Vicente Mark Anthony Blanco, commander of the 4th Marine Brigade, said that they are evaluating the best location in the city where the detachment could be established, noting that “peace and order in Laoag City and Ilocos Norte are really good.”

Previously, the Philippine Coast Guard announced that it would also be constructing a regional training center and sub-station in the city’s Barangay 32, La Paz Village. INQ
