DND now pushes for removal of ‘fixed term’ in AFP

MANILA, Philippines — After the reported “grumblings” in the military establishment, Defense Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. on Monday said he is now recommending the removal of “fixed terms” among Armed Forces of the Philippines personnel.

In an ambush interview after the Department of National Defense’s first flag-raising ceremony, Galvez said the Senate had expressed support for his recommendation about the new tenure law since he assumed office.

“We are very thankful that the Senate led by our Senate President (Juan Miguel Zubiri) made a statement that they would support our recommendation, which is, … [to] remove the term ‘fixed term,’ instead we will use the term ‘extended tenure of service,’” he told reporters.

Zubiri said the upper chamber seeks to pass the bill amending Republic Act 11709 within the first quarter of 2023. Under RA 11709, military officials appointed to key positions will serve a fixed term of three years,
