Classes suspended, over 3,400 people evacuated in Bicol due to flooding, landslides

LEGAZPI CITY — At least 1,016 families, or 3,405 people, were evacuated, while classes were suspended on Friday in some provinces in the Bicol region due to continuous heavy rains.

Gremil Alexis Naz, spokesperson for the Office of Civil Defense Bicol, said in a report that 166 areas reported flooding incidents and 29 rain-induced landslides.

About 93 local road sections and bridges were also rendered impassable due to overflowing rivers.

The evacuation of affected families from Camarines Sur and Camarines Norte started on Wednesday.

Some towns in Catanduanes also started the evacuation of residents due to flooding.

Classes at all levels in public and private schools were suspended in 11 towns in Catanduanes.

In Camarines Norte, classes at all levels continued to be suspended due to the threat of flooding and landslides.

Classes were suspended in Camarines Norte since Tuesday.

Gov. Ricarte Padilla advised local disaster officials to monitor the situation and conduct pre-emptive evacuations of residents in high-risk areas.

In Albay, class suspension was declared in Daraga, Camalig, Guinobatan, Pio Duran, and Sto. Domingo towns and the cities of Tabaco and Legazpi.
