Classes suspended in Oriental Mindoro town due to floods

CITY OF CALAPAN — Some villages in at least three towns in Oriental Mindoro province were flooded due to incessant rains brought by the low-pressure area and northeast monsoon, according to a report from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), on Wednesday, Jan. 18.

Ram Joseph Temeña, PDRRM officer, said in a text message that the agency has been collating reports from the local government units through their DRRMOs regarding the extent of the flooding. Temeña clarified that not all villages are flooded but only sub-villages or sitios.

Among areas flooded were two villages in Victoria (sub-village Inilawan in Urdaneta village and sitio 7 in the village of Malabo) and six villages in Baco (Mayabig, Mangangan 1, Mangangan II, Alag , Catwiran 1 and Burbuli).

In Naujan, Andres Ylagan, Buhangin, Santiago, Motoderaso, Masagana, Nag Iba 1, Nag Iba 2, Pinagsabangan 1, and Pinagsabangan 2 are flooded.

Meanwhile, floodwater reached chest level in Sto. Tabang Loob in Barangay Santiago Wednesday morning, according to videos sent by concerned citizens to Naujan Public Information Office.

Baco Mayor Allan Roldan canceled anew classes at all levels in public and private schools Wednesday at 6:10 a.m, due to torrential rains, which triggered floods, according to Memorandum Order No. 010-2023 that he issued.
