Classes suspended in Oriental Mindoro town due to floods

CITY OF CALAPAN — Classes at all levels in public and private schools were canceled Tuesday, Jan. 17, in Baco town in Oriental Mindoro due to torrential rains, which triggered floods, according to a memorandum by Mayor Allan Roldan.

The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office reported on its social media page that the rivers in Alag and Burbuli have reached a critical level as of 8:21 a.m.

The Provincial Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Office on Tuesday morning also reported that five villages in Baco (Mayabig, Alag, Catwiran, Pulang Tubig, and Burbuli), two in Victoria town
(Urdaneta and Malabo), and another five in Naujan (Andres Ylagan, Buhangin, Santiago, Motoderazo, and Masagana) were flooded.

In Bongabong town, a fishing boat sank at 5 a.m. due to strong waves triggered by a low-pressure area, MDRRMO officer Michael Fanoga, said in a text message.

At 6:30 a.m., the boat’s four passengers: Jerry Rivas, 31; Jayson Galindez, 38; Jeffrey de Luna, 20; and Nonoy Buno, 28, were rescued.  They were unharmed.

The boat came from Bongabong, and the passengers planned to fish in the water between Sibale in Romblon province and Bongabong.
