PIGCAWAYAN, Cotabato – A female head teacher was shot dead along the national highway here Wednesday evening.
Major Andres Sumugat, Pigcawayan police chief, identified the victim as Regina Cortez, a resident of Sitio Barte, Barangay Capayuran here, and head teacher of Tubon Elementary School.
Cortez, 46, sustained gunshot wounds to the head and was found dead beside the national highway in Barangay Tubon.
Sumugat said Cortez was last seen shopping in a local commercial establishment and was heading for home when the incident happened at around 7 p.m.
“We are still investigating, we are talking to her relatives,” Sumugat said.
Residents nearby said they heard several gunshots and spotted a speeding vehicle.
Sumugat said further investigation is ongoing.
Cortez had no known enemies in and out of school, her relatives said.
“We appeal for any information from witnesses that will help identify the perpetrators,” one relative said, asking that his name be withheld for security reasons.
Pigcawayan Mayor Juanito Agustin has condemned the attack against Cortez and directed the police to dig deeper and fast track their investigation to bring justice to the slain teacher.
