MANILA, Philippines — The total number of deaths due to heavy rains brought about by the shear line over the weekend has climbed to 29, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said in its latest incident report on Wednesday, a tragedy that stresses the importance of enhancing disaster preparedness.
Most of the deaths were reported in Region 10, with 18 deaths, while Region 5 logged six deaths; Region 8 three deaths; and two deaths in Region 9.
Of the reported fatalities, 22 are due to drowning, two due to “injury from flash floods,” and a person succumbed “due to injury from flash floods.”
The cause of death of the four remaining fatalities has not yet been determined.
Furthermore, a total of 25 people remain missing, while 10 were reported to be injured.
Agricultural damage stands at P206.4 million, while damage to infrastructure was pegged at P51.5 million.
The shear line brought moderate to heavy rains with, at times intense rains over parts of the southern part of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao in the past few days, according to the state weather bureau.
