MANILA, Philippines — Heavy rain was forecast to likely continue over Eastern Visayas in the next 2-3 days and residents were warned of possible flash floods and landslides on Saturday .

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), the shear line affecting the area would bring overcast skies and rain this weekend.

The shear line is where the cold winds of the northeast monsoon – locally termed amihan – and the hot easterly winds meet, creating cloudy skies and precipitation.

“Ngayong umaga palang or for the past 24 hours, nakapagtala na tayo ng significant rainfall o ‘yung moderate to heavy na pag-ulan dito sa Eastern Visayas area. So dito sa Eastern Visayas area, asahan natin na mataas talaga ‘yung tsansa ng flash floods at landslides at inaasahan natin ang pag-ulan na nararanasan sa nabanggit kong lugar ay posibleng magpatuloy for the next two to three days,” explained Pagasa weather specialist Daniel James Villamil.

(Since this morning or for the past 24 hours, we recorded significant rainfall or moderate to heavy rain here in the Eastern Visayas area. So here in the Eastern Visayas area, expect high chances of flash floods and landslides as we also anticipate that rain will likely continue in the mentioned area for the next 2-3 days.)

“The public and disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned are advised to take all necessary measures to protect life and property,” Pagasa said in an advisory.

The northeast monsoon, on the other hand, is still affecting Cagayan Valley, Cordillera Administrative Region, Aurora, and Quezon, where cloudy skies with rain may be anticipated. The northeast monsoon is also affecting Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon although Pagasa noted that it will have “no significant impact” in these areas.

State meteorologists likewise hoisted gale warnings as they predicted that the northeast monsoon will trigger waves ranging 2.8 meters to 5.5 meters over the seaboards of the following areas:
