Around 100 displaced vendors in Cebu allowed to sell at church compounds

CEBU CITY — At least 100 displaced vendors at the biggest public market here were allowed by the Archdiocese of Cebu to sell goods at the different church compounds in the cities of Cebu and Mandaue.

According to Fr. Alex Cola Jr., president of Cebu Caritas Inc., the arrangement stays during the Misa de Gallo or the nine-day dawn Masses from December 16 to 24 as approved by Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma.

“We want to help them as much as we can,” he said.

Last November, Cola said the vendors approached the Church to ask for help after they were no longer allowed to sell at the Carbon Public Market which was redeveloped by the city government.

At least 25 churches agreed to accommodate the displaced vendors.

Cola said they are planning to extend the stay of the vendors in church compounds even after the Misa de Gallo to help them earn a living for their respective families.
