Magnitude 5.6 earthquake hits Davao Oriental

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.6 earthquake hit Davao Oriental at 4:01 a.m. Saturday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs traced the epicenter 51 kilometers southeast of Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental.

State seismologists reported that th earthquake was felt at Intensity IV in Governor Generoso and Don Marcelino in Davao Oriental, Bansalan in Davao del Sur, and Malapatan and Malungon in Sarangani.

Intensity IV is described by the institute as “moderately strong” and “felt generally by people indoors and by some people outdoors”.

The earthquake was felt at Intensity III in Davao City,  Mati, Davao Oriental; Alabel, Glan, and Kiamba in Sarangani; City of Koronadal, Polomolok, Tampakan, and Tupi in South Cotabato and General Santos City.

It was measured at Intensity II  in Kidapawan City, Arakan, M’lang, Makilala, and Pikit in Cotabato; Maasim, Sarangani; Surallah, South Cotabato and Columbio, Sultan Kudarat

The tectonic earthquake’s depth of focus was 61  kilometers, said Phivolcs.

No damage is expected, but aftershocks can follow, it added.
