11 local holiday bills hurdle Senate panel

MANILA, Philippines —  Eleven local holiday measures hurdled the Senate Committee on Local Government on Monday.

Senator JV Ejercito, the panel chairperson, said the 11 bills would be submitted to the plenary for deliberations.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines supported the measures and did not express any objection.

The following are the 11 measures that are seeking local holidays:

  • Senate Bill No. 1153 – An Act Declaring February 21 of Every Year as “Araw ng Marinduque,” a Special Nonworking Holiday in the Province of Marinduque
  • Senate Bill No. 1299 – An Act Declaring March 7 of Every Year as a Special Non-Working Holiday in the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos), Province of Davao del Norte in Commemoration of its Founding Anniversary
  • Senate Bill No. 1274 – An Act Declaring October 22 of Every Year a Special Non-Working Holiday in the Municipality of Rosario, Province of Cavite, in Commemoration of its Founding Anniversary
  • House Bill No. 3972 – An Act Declaring February 21 of Every Year a Special Nonworking Holiday in the Province of Marinduque to be Known as Araw ng Marinduque, in Commemoration of its Founding Anniversary
  • House Bill No. 3969 –  An Act Declaring March 7 of Every Year a Special Nonworking Holiday in the Island Garden City of Samal, Province of Davao del Norte, in Commemoration of its Foundation Day
  • House Bill No. 3962 – An Act Declaring July 5 of Every Year a Special Nonworking Holiday in the Municipality of Bambang, Province of Nueva Vizcaya, to be Known as “Bambang Day,” in Commemoration of its Foundation Anniversary
  • House Bill No. 3963 – An Act Declaring November 23 of Every Year a Special Nonworking Holiday in the Province Benguet to be Known as Benguet Day in Commemoration of its Foundation Day
  • House Bill No. 3964 – An Act Declaring July 28 of Every Year a Special Nonworking Holiday in Cabadbaran City, Province of Agusan del Norte, to be known as Cabadbaran Day in Commemoration of its Foundation Day
  • House Bill No. 3965 – An Act Declaring July 15 of Every Year a Special Nonworking Holiday in the Cordillera Administrative Region, to be known as Cordillera Day in Commemoration of its Foundation Day
  • House Bill No. 3971 – An Act Declaring March 2 of Every Year a Special Nonworking Holiday in the Province of La Union, to be known as La Union Day, in Commemoration of its Founding Anniversary
  • House Bill No. 2868 –  An Act Declaring October 22 of Every Year a Special Nonworking Holiday in the Municipality of Rosario, Province of Cavite, in Commemoration of its Founding Anniversary

Currently, there are 20 national holidays, according to DOLE.
