NUJP seeks repeal of SIM Registration Act
MANILA, Philippines — The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) on Saturday added its voice to the growing calls to repeal the SIM Registration Act, saying it could have a “negative impact” on their jobs.
The measure which was signed into law by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in October requires all Filipinos to register their SIM cards by presenting their government-issued identification cards in a bid to combat fraud and text scams. It is set to take effect on Dec. 27.
However, NUJP opposed the law, saying this could pose “additional risks” to journalists, especially those pursuing sensitive issues such as conflict, crimes, and corruption.
“It also poses risks to our news sources and would make our work for transparency and the free flow of information more difficult,” the NUJP said in a statement.
The law also raises concerns about the privacy of journalists, as well as that of the general public, it pointed out.
