LUCENA CITY — A suspected member of the New People’s Army (NPA) surrendered to the police in Quezon province on Thursday, December 1, authorities said.
According to Police Regional Office 4A, the rebel, identified only as “Ka SK/Rosgen,” turned himself in to the headquarters of the police’s 405th Maneuver Company in Barangay Anoling in Gen. Nakar town.
The alleged rebel turned over a caliber 38 revolver, bullets, and communist documents.
Police said the rebel returnee reportedly operated in the provinces of Bulacan, Rizal, Laguna, and Northern Quezon section of the Sierra Madre mountain ranges.
The military and other government agencies will assist the surrenderer in his reintegration with free medical treatment, education, housing, and legal aid under the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines claimed that the NPA only has 2,112 forces while its so-called guerrilla fronts have been reduced to 24 from 89.
At its peak, it had 25,000 members in 1987, according to military estimates. INQ
