Land Transportation Office (LTO) Chief Jay Art Tugade
Newly appointed Land Transportation Office (LTO) chief Jose Arturo “Jay Art” Tugade issued on Thursday a directive to intensify the LTO’s campaign against overloaded motor vehicles, which the agency said was part of the new transport official’s advocacy on road safety.
After the new directive was issued, a combined team of law enforcers from the LTO Central Office and its Region 3 branch in Bulacan flagged down 22 motor vehicles and 15 trucks for violating the Republic Act No. 8794, or the Anti-Overloading Act of 2000.
Under the law, violators will pay a fine equivalent to 25 percent of the private motor vehicle tax or motor vehicle user’s charge imposed on trucks and trailers for loading beyond their prescribed gross vehicle weight.
In a statement, Tugade said overloaded trucks “present direct danger against other vehicles plying our roads.” —Mariejo S. Ramos
