MANILA, Philippines – An endangered alpha male Philippine long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis philippensis) has been sighted by trekkers on the highest mountain in the country, Mount Apo.

Sta. Cruz Tourism said Wednesday that the macaque made its rare appearance within the boulder face of Mount Apo, along the trail of Sta. Cruz town in Davao del Sur.

“This fauna is endemic in the Philippines and is considered as an endangered species,” it said in a Facebook post.

Sta. Cruz Tourism also shared a photo of the macaque, which was captured by tour guide company Lakaw ni Paw.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Davao, in a separate post, then reminded trekkers “to maintain a significant distance from our wildlife species and refrain from touching, feeding and hurting them.”
