‘Freak tornado’ hits Maguindanao del sur town
AMPATUAN, Maguindanao del Sur – At least 20 homes and business establishments in a village here were damaged by heavy rain accompanied by strong winds on Tuesday afternoon.
According to Ernesto Cabrera, a resident of Barangay Kauran, the extra strong downpour and winds brought down some structures, sent metal sheets of some houses flying, signboards of business establishments falling down, and several electric posts toppled.
Cabrera added that they thought it was a freak tornado.
Cabrera said the rain only passed by the village, lasting only for 15 minutes before the sky was clear again.
Nash Imam, head of Maguindanao provincial disaster risk reduction and management office, confirmed the freak weather disturbance and said an assessment of the damage is ongoing.
