MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., along with the rest of his family, attended on Tuesday a Mass at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB) for his father, former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr.

Marcos was accompanied by his wife, first lady Liza Araneta Marcos, his mother former first lady Imelda Marcos, sister Irene Marcos-Araneta, and other family members.

The Mass was held in observance of “Undas” — the traditional yearly visit of Filipinos to their loved ones’ graves on All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.

It has been almost six years since the controversial burial of the late president in LNMB — or Heroes’ Cemetery. He was laid to rest there on Nov. 18, an event most people were not expecting, thus generating a lot of opposition.

Marcos Sr. has been widely referred to by his critics as a dictator under whose martial law regime 3,240 people were killed, 70,000 were imprisoned, and 34,000 were tortured, according to Amnesty International.

This period also led to the closure of more than 80 newspapers, 292 radio stations, and public utility services.

Marcos Sr. ruled as president for a little over 20 years, from 1965 to 1986.
