LUCENA CITY — Six more persons drowned in the Calabarzon region during the onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm Paeng (international name: Nalgae), the Police Regional Office 4A (PRO-4A) reported on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
The three fatalities were from Laguna province, and one each from Cavite, Rizal, and Batangas.
In Los Baños, Laguna, a search-and-rescue team found the body of Lilia Clado, 78, on Monday afternoon in Mulawin river in Barangay Maahas, some 50 meters from the victim’s house.
The family said Clado had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and had a habit of roaming outside.
The relatives believed the victim accidentally fell from the creek and drowned in the river.
In Pangil town, Nestor Monteagudo, 59, was rescued around 11:45 a.m. from the Pangil River in Barangay San Jose. He died while being taken to General Cailles Memorial District Hospital.
Another unidentified male body was found Monday floating in Laguna de Bay in Barangay Looc in Calamba City.
In Tanza, Cavite, Alfie Montealegre tried at 6 p.m. on Oct. 30 to cross a river in Barangay Tanauan but the raging water swept him away. After several hours, he was found dead from drowning in another part of the river.
In Barangay San Rafael in Rodriguez, Rizal, a strong current around 2 p.m. on Oct. 30 swept the boat of Dominador de la Cruz, who was then traversing the Wawa river. Witnesses said De la Cruz fell into the river. His body was recovered the next day.
Another report said Ryan Doringo and his friends were swimming on Monday afternoon in the sea at a resort in Barangay San Diego in Lian, Batangas.
Strong waves spawned by the storm hit the group. The others survived the rush of seawater, but Doringo sank. After a few minutes, he was found on the shore unconscious.
He was taken to the nearest hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
On Monday, the PRO-4A reported that at least 16 persons died in the region over the weekend due to Paeng.
Nine died from drowning, two from electrocution, one by a landslide, one from a falling concrete wall, and another from a falling coconut tree.
