Paeng leaves 16 deaths in Calabarzon

Three motorists die in separate road accidents in Cavite and Quezon provinces in Calabarzon region.

LUCENA CITY — At least 16 persons died in Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon) region during the onslaught of Severe Tropical Storm Paeng (international name: Nalgae) over the weekend, authorities said.

Nine of them died from drowning, two from electrocution, one by a landslide, one from a falling concrete wall, another from a falling coconut tree.

Seven of the fatalities were from Quezon, four from Batangas, three from Cavite, and two from Laguna, the police in these provinces reported on Monday.

In Quezon, the fatalities were Felipe Monteroso, whose body was found at 3:15 p.m. Sunday floating in the sea off Barangay Tulay Buhangin in Padre Burgos town; Jenard Sinar, who drowned Sunday after jumping into the river in Barangay Boboin of Infanta town to retrieve floating logs; Arnel Atienza, also a drowning victim in Dolores town.

Also dead were Ronaldo Abrea, who was hit at 7 p.m. Sunday by a fallen concrete wall while resting inside his house in Pagbilao town; Marlon Taburdan, an electrician, also from Pagbilao, who was electrocuted on Saturday when the live wire he was holding fell into flood water.

The body of Michael Perez, of Guinayangan town was found at 10 p.m. on Sunday after he went missing on Saturday noon, when he crossed a river to feed his hog; and an unidentified man, whose naked body was found at 7:20 a.m. on Monday at the shore of Barangay Dalahican in Lucena City.

In Batangas, four deaths were recorded on Saturday and Monday, said Joselito Castro, the provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office head.

One of the fatalities was a 12-year-old boy, Nino Cortas, who died Saturday after a coconut tree fell on him in Barangay Mabalanoy in San Juan town.

Two residents of Talisay town – Lourdes De Roxas, 54, and Lesley Anne Talavero, 13 – also died Saturday after a landslide buried them in Barangay Sampaloc, while a farmer, Warren Malaguit, drowned in Sto. Tomas City and whose body was recovered early on Monday.

In Cavite, the police identified the victims as Jhon Christian Yuson, who drowned Saturday night after he fell into Bacao River in Barangay Bacao 2 in General Trias City when his house was hit by floodwater; Fernando Borife, a bedridden person who fell from his bed and drowned on Sunday as flood engulfed his house in Barangay Tramo-Bantayan of Kawit town; and Mark Robin Silvestre, also from Kawit, who died from electrocution around 3 a.m. Sunday while trying to fix the electric breaker in their house in Barangay Aplaya at the height of the storm.

In Laguna, police recorded two deaths in Biñan City, identified as Maria Theresa Tamayo, who drowned Saturday night after floodwater entered their house in Barangay San Antonio; and Jerry Cayobit, who fell on Saturday night into a drainage canal in another part of San Antonio, and was trapped by flood water. His body was recovered the next day.
