SANTIAGO CITY — The body of a 75-year-old market vendor was recovered on Sunday, Oct. 30, after he fell into a river while crossing a wooden bridge at the height of Severe Tropical Storm Paeng (international name Nalgae) in Nueva Vizcaya province.

Police said on Monday that Juanito Valera was swept away by the strong current and drowned in the swollen river at Barangay Kirang in Aritao town.

In Aritao’s Barangay Balite, a 26-year-old man went missing after he, his wife, and father-in-law were crossing a bridge over a swollen river.

The strong current dragged Nico Ramirez into the deeper portion of the river.

Police said the man’s wife and his father-in-law were rescued.

During the rescue-and-retrieval operation, a policeman, Patrolman Marvin Estocado, was saved from electrocution and brought to a hospital.

In Isabela province, a 65-year-old woman was found dead Sunday at the back of her house at Barangay Bagnos in Aurora town.

Police, however, said the death of Rebecca Balila was not typhoon-related, since she was believed to have died of a heart attack. INQ
