MANILA, Philippines — A total of 43,151 travelers were affected by flight cancellations amid Tropical Storm Paeng (international name: Nalgae), the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said Sunday.
Of the 618 scheduled flights for October 29, bad weather brought by Paeng cancelled 295 flights, the MIAA said in a statement.
On Saturday afternoon, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) closed its runways to flight operations starting 4 p.m. due to strong winds caused by Paeng. The runways were reopened at 10 p.m.
“Several diverted flights on the other hand, have started to arrive after NAIA runways opened at 10 p.m. last night. Delayed flights from yesterday on the other hand, have been re-timed to depart or arrive today after airlines submitted their proposed re-timings to MIAA and the CAAP (Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines),” said MIAA.
“As of this writing, passengers of disrupted flights have started to proceed to the airport. The MIAA operations teams are working closely with airline agents to expedite processing of passengers,” it added.
The MIAA then assured the public that it has cleared the roads around Naia of debris and that there were no reports of damaged vehicles or injuries after Paeng barreled through Metro Manila.
Based on the state weather bureau’s latest typhoon bulletin, Paeng was last located in the West Philippine Sea, 225 kilometers west northwest of Iba, Zambales and is set to leave the Philippine area of responsibility by Monday morning.
