MANILA, Philippines — Runways of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) were temporarily closed to flight operations on Saturday afternoon due to the gusty winds brought by Severe Tropical Storm Paeng, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said.

Runway flight operations were suspended at 4 p.m. but the closure was extended until 10 pm.

MIAA also said strong winds hitting the Naia aerodrome made it difficult for several aircraft to land. This resulted in flight diversions that started at 3:30 pm.

“The MIAA seeks the understanding of the air riding public as safety of flights and passengers are its priority,” the agency added.
